Albany’s November Events Feature Fabulous Entertainment, Special Celebrations and Holiday Treats
Albany, N.Y. — The Capital City on the Hudson River has a November that’s packed with special events and great performances.
The celebration of the 400th anniversary of Albany’s discovery by explorer Henry Hudson continues with special lectures, art displays and more. At the Empire state Plaza, the 38th Annual Festival of Nations takes place on November 1, with the site of the nation’s first Shaker settlement holding its annual Christmas Craft Fair.
Throughout November, The Egg welcomes performances by Lyle Lovett, John Prine, Arlo Guthrie and other fabulous performers. The Palace features the Dark Star Orchestra and The Wiggles as they “Go Bananas”. At the Times Union Center, Metallica and PHISH are in concert, while River Rats’ hockey settles in for a long stretch on home ice. My Fair Lady opens at Capital Repertory Theatre, and while Michael W. Smith brings his New Hallelujah World Tour to the Washington Avenue Armory.
At the end of November, the 13th Annual Capital Holiday Lights opens in Albany’s Washington Park with more than 100 new illuminated display and scenes that are “Celebrating Our Differences”.

Picturing History: The Artwork of Len Tantillo. Len Tantillo’s paintings capture the dynamic life and look of the Hudson River from pre-Colonial days to Dutch settlement, through the era of steamboat travel and commerce. Tantillo discusses his interpretation of the past through research and the creative process as well as his exhibition of 60 works in Hoorn, Holland, for the Hudson Quadricentennial.

William Husson, a lecturer in the Department of Communication at UAlbany, discusses the ways in which documentary and fiction films have explored the Hudson River-not only as a commercial waterway and environmental treasure but also as a symbol of American values, dreams, and aspirations.

Beauty, the Boss, and the River: Planning Albany’s Riverfront, 1900-1920. John Pipkin, Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at UAlbany, talks about the political struggle over Albany’s riverfront in the early 20th century. Civic pride was affronted by the visual squalor of the river basin, and Boss Barnes began a modest beautification program. The project moved from a brief flirtation with City Beautiful ideology to a modern style of urban policy and planning.
