1812 Reenactor to Exhibit Period Sewing Implements March 17-18 on Great Lakes Seaway Trail

schofieldimplements724.jpgSackets Harbor, N.Y. - Living history reenactor Ted Schofield of Chaumont, NY, makes his own War of 1812 and Civil War uniforms by hand using period reproduction sewing implements. He says, “I do all hand work now to be more authentic in my interpretation of the 1812 period.”
 
On March 17 and 18 as part of the unique Great Lakes Seaway Trail National Scenic Byway War of 1812 Bicentennial Quilt Show event, Ted will display his collection of tools, iron needles; scissors; buttons; binding; threads; fabric swatches, including linsey-woolsey; and a rose blanket and homespun blanket common to the early 19th century time. Lake Placid Hosts Biathlon Nor Am Cup Races March 3-4

lake-placid-biathlon.JPGLake Placid, N.Y. - The Biathlon North American (Nor Am) Cup competition will be held, Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4, 2012, at the Mt. van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex in Lake Placid. Biathletes from across the United States and Canada will compete in this exciting winter sport that combines cross country skiing and rifle marksmanship.

The schedule includes sprint and pursuit format race events for men and women in senior, junior, youth, master, and grand master classes. Skiing distances vary per event and class. Read more »

The series hits the road again with the fifth program, the “Adirondack Civilian Conservation Corps: History, Memories and Legacy of the CCC.” The program will held in North Creek, N.Y. on Sunday, March 11, 2012.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public works program that operated from 1933 to 1942 as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. In the Adirondacks, enrollees built trails, roads, campsites and dams, they stocked fish, built and maintained fire towers, observers’ cabins and telephone lines, fought fires, and planted millions of trees. The Sweetest Time of Year: New York State’s Maple Producers Host 17th Annual Maple Weekends in March

Albany, N.Y. - One of the “sweetest” events of early spring will be hosted by over 110 maple producers across New York State. The 17th annual Maple Weekends will be held for two weekends next month, March 17-19 and 24-25, offering free open houses for the public to see and learn how maple syrup and other related products are produced. New York State is the country’s third largest maple producer and the world’s fourth largest, according the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
 
“Our goal is to share the taste of real, mouth-watering maple syrup with residents and out-of-state visitors, and to let them know that New York’s maple syrup has established a reputation as one of the highest quality maple syrups in the world,” comments Helen Thomas, executive director of the 500-member New York State Maple Producers Association. “An impressive fact is that the state manufactured 564,000 gallons of maple syrup in 2011, the highest production rate in 64 years. Campground Owners of New York introduces a new “app” for smart phones and tablets

Working with Syracuse-based Rounded Development, a leading agency for strategy, branding, mobile, and web, CONY has developed an application for use on smart phones and other like devices. The application - or “app” - provides screen-friendly information about New York campgrounds and RV parks, including distance markers and route mapping, and links to websites, emails, reservation pages, and phone numbers.  The app will officially launch on February 28, 2012.

The app is free, and available at Apple’s App Store for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and from Android’s Market for Android devices and tablets.  Find the app by typing in “NY Campground & RV Park Guide” or use keyword searches for CONY, New York campgrounds, NY campgrounds, New York camping, camping New York, camping, or RV parks.
