Owego, N.Y. - If you want to see the prettiest painted communities in America, you’re going to need a lot of time, several tanks of gas, and a state-of-the-art GPS. The Paint Quality Institute has identified the nation’s 12 most beautifully painted neighborhoods and towns, and many are little known and far from the beaten path.
Naming of the 12 “Prettiest Painted Places in America” comes after a rigorous four-month search by the Paint Quality Institute that involved thousands of contacts with state tourism departments, convention and visitors’ bureaus, chambers of commerce, and Main Street groups, all of whom were invited to nominate communities. Ticonderoga, N.Y. - Fort Ticonderoga will host its Third Annual “Material Matters: It’s in the Details” the weekend of January 26 & 27, 2013. This weekend event focuses on the material culture of the 18th century and is intended for collectors, re-enactors, and people with a general interest in learning more about objects of the 18th century and what they can tell us about history. “Material Matters” takes place in the Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center at Fort Ticonderoga and is open by pre-registration only.
A panel of material culture experts comes to Fort Ticonderoga for the weekend to share their knowledge of 18th-century material culture in a series of presentations. Designed for those who want a deeper understanding of the everyday objects that help tell the story of life and the contests for control of North America during the 18th century, the weekend’s informal approach enables attendees to interact with presenters and provides an opportunity to examine 18th-century objects up close. Albany, N.Y. - When Price Chopper Capital Holiday Lights opens on Nov. 23 in Washington Park, it’s going to be “A Sweet 16 Celebration.”
The 16th Annual Price Chopper Capital Holiday Lights will open nightly at 6 p.m. through Jan. 4 for a glowing celebration — lighting the dark winter nights with more than 125 illuminated displays throughout the historic park. At the end of the drive through, the Washington Park Lakehouse features visits with Santa (through Dec. 23), refreshments, crafts, costumed characters and lots of surprises. Read more »

Ellicottville, N.Y. - The cold weather is setting in, and there’s no snow for skiing or snowboarding, yet Holiday Valley is anticipating a big crowd on November 9 and 10. The 9th Annual Holiday Valley Beer and Wine Festival will take place November 10 from 3:30 to 7:30 PM in the Yodeler Lodge. A sell-out crowd of over 2,000 people are expected to attend Saturday’s Beer Fest event. Presale tickets are $45 per person.
