Finger Lakes Food Face-Off
CANANDAIGUA – The New York Pro-Am Chef Challenge (Slice, Dice and Spice NY), which pairs professional chefs with amateur teams in an Iron Chef-like cook-off using Finger Lakes ingredients, will be held May 12-15 at the New York Wine & Culinary Center here.
The Challenge will take place during National Tourism Week and is designed to highlight the culinary and agricultural bounty of the Finger Lakes Region, which includes the people and food producers of Ontario, Wayne and Livingston counties and the Canandaigua Wine Trail. For three days (May 12-14), the professional chefs will be teamed up in preliminary competitions with nine amateur teams. On the final day (May. 15), the top three teams will compete in an Iron Chef-like competition to determine the 2008 winner.

The teams will be asked to create a meal using common “Market Basket” of ingredients from local farmers and food producers, plus one secret ingredient. Wine pairings will be chosen from wineries on the Canandaigua Wine Trail. Voting criteria will include the teams’ ability to plan a creative menu highlighting the main elements of the meal, use of Market Basket ingredients and the surprise ingredient, and wine pairing.
