Midwinter Family Fun
Don’t just hunker down by the fire with your kids when their school takes its annual midwinter recess. Head to New York State’s hills and fields for fun in the snow the whole family can enjoy. Here are three of the best bets. The first snowfall heralds the start of winter fun in the Lake George region, three-and-a-half hours north of New York City. Cross-country skiers will marvel at the many trails in the area, including a network of lighted trails in nearby Glens Falls.
Closer to home, try Windham, just two hours north of New York City in the Catskills. Beginners and intermediates have their choice of groomed runs, but experts can find challenges too. Mount Peter, known as ‘The Friendly One’, is practically in New York City’s back yard in the heart of the Hudson Valley, just an hour’s drive north. Now entering its 71st season, Mount Peter was started in 1936 by Macy’s Department Store to show off and sell ski fashions.
