SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The thundering sounds of polo ponies, competing on an area the size of three football fields, return with the fast-paced action of the 110th Anniversary season of Saratoga Polo.
The 2008 season opens on June 20 and play continues through Aug. 31.
Saratoga Polo is one of the four oldest polo clubs in the United States, located on 42 acres, with many matches taking place on the original field built by William Collins Whitney in 1898.
“Polo is a sport of great energy and passion. When you’re watching a match, you know you are part of history — a sport that dates back about 2,500 years. It’s also a sport for everyone including families, horse lovers and even the family dog,” said James Rossi, managing partner of the Saratoga Polo.
The sport focuses on the athleticism of both polo pony and the rider. Achieving speeds of up to 30 miles an hour, the ponies compete as the riders swing their mallets to hit the ball that travels up to 100 miles per hour.
Throughout the season, Saratoga Polo matches are scheduled every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday through Labor Day. Gates open at 4 pm and matches start at 5:30 pm (weather and field conditions permitting) at the polo grounds at Bloomfield and Denton Roads.
Saratoga Polo offers two options for watching a match:
- General admission to Saratoga Polo is a relaxed setting with families, friends and canine companions enjoying the game. General admission is $25 per carload Tailgate picnics are welcome.
- Clubhouse admission is $25 per person and patrons dress as they might for a day at the racetrack. Clubhouse patrons enjoy box seats on a first-come, first-served basis.
Dining options at Saratoga Polo include an incredible variety of tapas in the clubhouse area for an additional $25 per person.
Complete, four-course dinners are available at $65 per person, prix fixe. Seatings are at 7:30 and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. During track season, dining hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. and also offered on Thursday and Saturday as well. Reservations are recommended by calling Saratoga Polo at 518-584-8108.
