Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - For over 115 years, The Saratoga Polo Association has welcomed some of the most exciting and historic polo matches in the United States, and over the past few decades, the crowds and level of play has skyrocketed. In 2013, Saratoga Polo Association will be hosting eight additional weeks of sports in addition to polo.
It’s not surprising that new and emerging sports such as lacrosse, soccer, rugby, and even Ultimate Frisbee are looking and booking their tournaments at the lush grounds of The Whitney Fields to make their mark in the Saratoga Sports Market.
“Whitney Field is a remarkable venue for polo, ” said Jim Rossi, Managing Partner of Saratoga Polo Association, and Chief Marketing Officer for the U.S. Polo Association, “and what’s even more exciting is how so many burgeoning sports leagues see the size of our fields and attraction of the destination as the main reason to come here to Saratoga.”
To give you an idea of why these tournaments work so well at the two fields of Saratoga Polo, it’s best to understand that each polo field is nine and one half times the size of a football field. “Just from the pure logistics of running a tournament with multiple matches, the size and scope of the Whitney Fields makes life simpler for the sports event managers,” said Alan Edstrom, The Events and Sponsorship Manager at Saratoga Polo.
The sports market in the Spa City is growing in intensity and popularity due to the efforts of presenters like Saratoga Polo, event producers, and local agencies. Heather McElhiney, Director of Sports Sales at the Saratoga Convention and Tourism Bureau, added, ” We are very fortunate to have an accomplished sporting event venue partner in the Saratoga Polo Association. The field quality is top notch, the team at Saratoga Polo understands the unique needs of each event, and works diligently and professionally with owners and planners to make each tournament a success.”
Ryan Powell, a four-time All-American lacrosse player at Syracuse University, and a professional in the National Lacrosse League and Major League Lacrosse, looked to the Saratoga destination, and Saratoga Polo specifically to inaugurate his Rhino Lacrosse Tournament brand during the July 4th weekend, one week before Saratoga Polo begins its 115th tournament season. “Our management team has organized and participated in lacrosse tournaments for many years, many of which are located in well-known destinations, like Lake Placid, Honolulu, Vail and Lake Tahoe. Historic Saratoga Springs, NY stands shoulder to shoulder with any of these destinations and the venue for our inaugural Saratoga tournament, the Saratoga Polo Association, has the potential to be a pre-eminent facility for events such as ours. Rhino Lacrosse is excited to host the Saratoga Springs Lacrosse Shootout on the Whitney Fields as it offers a flexible and accessible layout, an elegant setting, quality facilities and excellent capability for our event to grow in the years ahead.”
Rob Thompson, Managing Partner of North American Sports Group, based in the Capital Region, is another prominent sports promoter who is joining forces at Saratoga Polo Association to bring multi tournament events to Whitney Field over Memorial Day Weekend. His events have a nation wide reach, but he sees the destination of Saratoga Springs, and the relationship with Saratoga Polo as keys to his company’s success. ”As a locally based national grassroots sports business, we are always looking for first class sports venues that provide the ‘wow’ factory for our athletes families and fans. At Saratoga Polo, Jim Rossi and his team have created one of the best facilities and fan experience in the Northeast. We are thrilled to be bringing a USA Sports Festival to town this Memorial Day Weekend.”
Saratoga Polo Association celebrates its 115th Tournament Season July 12 through September 1, with matches happening every Friday and Sunday at 5:30pm at Whitney Field. Schedule, ticket, group package, and sponsorship information is available at saratogapolo.com .
