Skiing Near NYC
There are three ski fields — Windham Mountain, Hunter Mountain and Putnam County — just a few hours out of Manhattan. The family-friendly Windham Mountain, just 118 miles out of New York City, houses 42 ski trails and is serviced by eight lifts. Aside from skiing, the vast expanse of the resort is also conducive to other activities, including snowboarding (there’s a 400 foot half-pipe), and tubing. At 1600 feet, the resort features one of the largest (and heartwrenchingly exciting) vertical drops in the Catskills.
Just two and half hours from Manattan, the Hunter Mountain ski resort became, in 1989, the first in the state to utilize a snow making machine. Since then it’s developed into an all season destination for skiers, snowboarders and snowtubers, and is well serviced by the Kaatskill Mountain Club, an upscale lodge and hotel which opened in 2005.
70 minutes out of New York City, Putnam County’s Fahnestock Memorial State Park contains 15km of well groomed cross-country skiing trails in a kid safe environment and a setting which is beautiful and tranquil.
