New York, NY- In addition to discovering the wonders of Long Island’s famed Black Course at Bethpage State Park, viewers of this year’s Golf Digest US Open Challenge will “Discover a Different New York,” thanks to the filmmaking talents of Syracuse resident Sean Cunningham. “Discover a Different New York,” Cunningham’s award-winning entry to the inaugural I LOVE NEW YORK Short Film Competition, will air during the Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge program, Sunday, June 21.

Cunningham’s Grand Prize-winning short film, which extols the virtues of upstate New York, was one of several hundred entries in the competition, part of New York State’s re-launch of its iconic I Love New York brand last year.  Filmmakers ages 14 and older, regardless of their experience behind a camera, were eligible to participate.

Cunningham, a cinema major alumnus of

Binghamton

University, wanted to represent many different parts of

New York in his video, showcasing

New York

State beyond just

New York City. Locations spotlighted in “Discover a Different New York” included areas of the

Finger Lakes and Thousand Island-Seaway regions.”In addition to having the greatest city in the world, New York State is home to an amazing variety of landscapes, communities and adventures, and ‘Discover a Different New York’ perfectly conveys this message,” said Thomas Ranese, chief marketing officer of Empire State Development, which administers the I LOVE NEW YORK program.”Discover a Different New York” was selected by a panel of entertainment industry celebrities with strong ties to

New York, including Academy Award-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, Emmy-winner Tina Fey, and MTV Movie Award-winning filmmaker Doug Liman. The short film first appeared as part of a commercial during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast, and was also featured on jetBlue Airways seatback televisions and the Independent Film Channel (IFC).
